From patient education to the latest advanced treatments, Dr. Sonde and our team always focus on patient comfort. The process starts with an accurate diagnosis, and one of the key tools we use to diagnose vein problems early is a lower extremity ultrasound.
Why a Leg Ultrasound Matters
A lower extremity ultrasound is a safe, painless test using sound waves to screen for vein problems, such as varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). We typically perform Doppler ultrasounds, showing the blood flow within the legs. If blood isn’t flowing as it should, it may be a sign of problems such as venous insufficiency or a blood clot. By detecting issues early, we can begin treatment before symptoms get worse.
Signs You Might Need a Vein Ultrasound
We often recommend a leg ultrasound if you notice:
- Leg pain or heaviness
- Swelling in your feet, ankles, or calves
- Bulging or twisted veins
- Discoloration around the lower legs and ankles
- Dry, flaky lower leg skin
- Sores that heal slowly or not at all
In addition, you could need a lower extremity ultrasound if you’re planning surgery. This ultrasound screening is often crucial to surgery prep because it can identify serious problems like DVT. Diagnosing and managing such problems early can greatly reduce the risk of serious complications like pulmonary embolisms.
What to Expect During the Test
This test is noninvasive, painless, and takes about 30 minutes. You’ll lie on a table while your ultrasound technician applies a conductive water-based gel to your legs. They move a small device over your skin, gently but firmly guiding it to capture images of your veins.
Dr. Sonde expertly reviews the results, mapping your veins to pinpoint areas of concern so she can diagnose and formulate a treatment plan.
