Venous Ultrasound in Chevy Chase, MD & Washington, D.C.

At the Center for Vein Disease, patients receive advanced, noninvasive vascular imaging to detect and treat vein conditions early. Led by Dr. Mehru Sonde, a renowned, board-certified vein expert serving the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region, our team uses precise ultrasound diagnostics to guide safe, effective vein care.

What Is a Venous Ultrasound?

A venous ultrasound is a painless, noninvasive test that uses sound waves to evaluate blood flow in the veins.

It helps detect blockages, valve dysfunction, and blood clots that may interfere with healthy circulation. This advanced technology provides real-time images of how blood moves through the veins, giving Dr. Sonde highly detailed insight into your vascular health.

Unlike other imaging methods, venous ultrasound doesn't involve radiation or injections. It’s often the first and most important step in diagnosing conditions such as venous insufficiency and deep vein thrombosis(blood clots). A venous ultrasound pinpoints problems and allows for accurate mapping of the vascular system so Dr. Sonde can tailor your vein procedures.

For some patients, follow-up ultrasounds are recommended after procedures such as endovenous radiofrequency ablation, laser therapy, or VenaSeal to confirm successful outcomes.

When You Might Need a Venous Ultrasound

Dr. Sonde may recommend a venous ultrasound for several reasons, particularly if you experience symptoms that could indicate poor vein function. These symptoms may include:

  • Leg pain or heaviness
  • Visible varicose or spider veins
  • Swelling in the feet, ankles, or calves
  • Cramping, burning, or throbbing sensations in the legs
  • Skin discoloration, thickening, or ulcers near the ankles

The test helps Dr. Sonde determine whether your veins are carrying blood back to the heart efficiently or whether the valves within the veins are failing, allowing blood to pool.

The Venous Ultrasound Procedure

During a venous ultrasound, you’ll lie comfortably on an exam table while a technician applies a clear gel to the skin. This gel helps transmit sound waves from a handheld transducer, which is gently moved over the area being examined (usually the legs). The ultrasound machine produces live images on a monitor, allowing Dr. Sonde to assess blood flow and identify any abnormalities.

The entire procedure typically takes 30-45 minutes and requires no downtime. You can resume normal activities immediately afterward.

Dr. Sonde reviews the results in detail with you and discusses your diagnosis and, if necessary, next steps for treatment.
